LAB GROWN DIAMONDS
Lab-grown diamonds, also known as man-made or synthetic diamonds, are identical to natural diamonds in their chemical properties. The only difference lies in how the diamonds are created. Whilst natural diamonds take millions of years to develop beneath the Earth's crust, lab-grown diamonds are created in highly controlled laboratory environments that replicate the conditions under which natural diamonds form, but in a fraction of the time.
How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?
Lab-grown diamonds are created using one of two forms of advanced scientific technology: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD).
HPHT method:
The traditional HPHT method replicates the extreme heat and pressure conditions deep within the Earth's crust that create natural diamonds.
- Select a diamond seed (a small piece of diamond used as the growth foundation)
- Place the seed into a piece of pure carbon
- Subject the seed and carbon to extreme heat and pressure in a controlled laboratory environment
- Maintain conditions that replicate those found deep within the Earth's crust, where natural diamonds form
- Allow the carbon to crystallise around the seed over the growth period
- Extract the grown diamond once it reaches the desired size and quality
- Cut and polish the diamond to the final specifications
The HPHT method is well established but requires significant equipment investment.
CVD method:
CVD is a relatively modern technology for producing lab-grown diamonds but has proven highly successful. CVD diamond growth takes place within a vacuum chamber.
- Place a diamond seed from a natural diamond into a vacuum chamber
- Fill the chamber with hydrogen and a carbon-containing gas such as methane
- Direct a microwave beam at the gas to break down the molecules
- Allow carbon atoms to attach to the diamond seed, building the crystal layer by layer
- Polish the diamond seed periodically throughout growth to remove the rough edges of black graphite that form during the process
- Continue the growth process until the diamond reaches the desired size and quality
- Extract and cut the finished diamond
The CVD method produces diamonds much more quickly than HPHT, making it increasingly popular for commercial diamond production.
What is the difference between Lab grown and Natural Diamonds?
There are no visible differences between lab-grown and natural diamonds when compared to the naked eye. They have exactly the same light performance, durability, hardness and can be certified by established diamond grading laboratories such as GIA and IGI.
The only way to distinguish between the two diamonds is by using specialised equipment to identify their different crystal growth patterns.
LAB GROWN
NATURALThe main difference between the two is formation. Whilst natural diamonds form in the Earth's mantle over millions of years, lab-grown diamonds form in laboratories in just a few weeks or months. Because lab-grown diamonds require less time and cost less to produce overall, they are much more abundant, which lowers their value. This makes lab-grown diamonds far more affordable, but natural diamonds the better investment option.
Are Lab Grown Diamonds certified?

At Diamond Heaven, all our lab-grown diamonds come with certification.
The grading process is identical for lab-grown and natural diamonds. The process focuses on the 4 Cs: cut, clarity, colour and carat. Each step of the grading process is taken very seriously to ensure all diamonds receive the correct grade. The certificate will then state whether any further heat treatment has been applied to the diamond and whether it is an HPHT or CVD diamond.
At Diamond Heaven, we sell GIA and IGI certified lab-grown diamonds. Please note that GIA certificates are online documentation only and can be downloaded for your records. IGI lab-grown diamonds come with a physical certificate.
Are Lab Grown Diamonds Ethical?
Lab-grown diamonds are generally considered a more ethical choice for engagement rings. They require no mining, which means no environmental damage. The working conditions for lab-grown diamonds are also more ethical, as we can be entirely certain where the diamond has come from and verify the human rights and working conditions of those involved.
Lab-grown diamonds do consume a considerable amount of energy; however, this is significantly lower than mining a natural diamond. In recent years, diamond mines have made critical changes to become more ethically conscious. All legitimate diamond mining companies abide by the Kimberley Process, which ensures the legitimacy of diamonds purchased and confirms they have not been used to finance conflict.
Should I choose a lab grown or natural diamond?
Ultimately, the decision is yours, but Diamond Heaven is here to help you every step of the way.
Choose a natural diamond if…
Choose a natural diamond if you prioritise the diamond's long-term value and investment prospects. If you view your jewellery collection as an asset or want to purchase pieces you can pass down from generation to generation, a natural diamond is ideal. Natural diamonds also suit customers who value rarity, exclusivity and the tradition associated with a natural stone.
Choose a lab grown diamond if…
Choose a lab-grown diamond if budget is your priority. Lab-grown diamonds deliver larger carat weights and higher clarity grades within the same budget, meaning you get more for your money. If you are purchasing jewellery to wear rather than to hold as an asset, lab-grown diamonds are the better choice. They are also preferable if you are concerned about environmental impact, as they have a significantly lower environmental footprint than large-scale mining operations.
